The Children’s Advocacy Center of Kalamazoo (CAC) is a caring, child focused, safe place for children who have been sexually abused and severely physically abused to come to for help. We offer forensic interviews, pre-interview developmental assessments, child abuse assessments, referral to medical specialists, trauma-focused individual therapy and age-appropriate support groups for victims, suspected victims, and non-offending family members.
The goals of the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) are to protect children who have been sexually or physically abused and prevent further abuse; to preserve and improve the child victim’s mental health through supportive and responsive services during the time of disclosure and thereafter; to maintain and reconstitute a healthy family by healing the scars of sexual abuse and helping the child and family redirect their efforts toward positive growth and development; to enhance community safety by preventing the perpetration of sexual abuse; and to provide a continuum of care and service to sexually abused children and their non-offending family members.
If a child has been sexually abused or severely physically abused, or an adult suspects that a child has been suffered this kind of trauma, he or she is referred to the Children’s Advocacy Center by a Children’s Protective Services worker or the police, or other concerned adults in the child’s life.
A Multi-Disciplinary Team comprised of Children’s Advocacy Center’s professional staff, medical providers, mental health professionals, police, prosecutors and victim advocates work together to help the child and the child’s family through the investigative process. Upon request of a law enforcement officer or Child Protective Service worker, a forensic interview may be scheduled. The interview takes place in a child-friendly environment by a specially trained person. It is conducted in a neutral, fact-finding manner. We coordinate with other professionals to avoid duplicative interviewing.
Children who have been sexually or physically abused as well as their non-offending family members receive counseling and support services by our Family Advocate and experienced CAC therapists who are specially trained to treat sexually abused children. Individual and group therapy in a child friendly environment are part of the healing process for children who have been sexually abused.
We also offer Prevention Training which includes Mandated Reporter training, approved by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Contact us with your needs.
